An early Republican painter-calligrapher, he resided in Shanghai and was Deputy Magistrate of Jiangsu. In his career, he most admired the style of the Tang calligrapher Li Yong, taking a sobriquet and name to reflect this. Bronze and Stele studies flourished in the late Qing, so much as to “emphasize steles to the detriment of modelbooks.” Gao was knowledgeable about many steles and renowned with Wu Changshi, Zhang Zuyi, and Wang Xun as the Four Shanghai Calligraphers. This is an excerpt from the Eastern Han Ritual Vessels Stele. The brushwork is mature and brush tip concealed for beauty with spirit and feeling. From 1916, Gao was 67 by Chinese reckoning.(20120713)
