He inherited the title of Count from his father, who was the Prime Minister, and later was given the name Wen-hsi, posthumously. A skilled calligrapher and painter, Chang was noted particularly for his landscapes, birds and flowers. He formed his own painting style on the basis of the ideas of Wang Ku-hsiang (1501-1568) and Chou Chih-mien (ca.1580-1610). This ink painting depicts strange rocks and a thick clump of narcissus on the foreground slope. In the distance, a rapidly flowing stream is brimming forth. Flowers and leaves have been outlined, and the latter filled-in with darker or lighter washes so as to distinguish the front and reverse sides of the leaves. The artist rendered this scene in a very careful and meticulous hand.
