In this work, a hollyhock branch in colorful bloom attracts an approaching butterfly, creating a visually appealing scene. This work is typical of “branch segment” flower painting (with only part of the plant shown). The technique is delicate and refined here, and the coloring opulent and rich. Flowers and leaves twist naturally. The branch occupies much of the composition, like that in a close up. The petal outlines were first done in ink and washes of cinnabar were then added. Leaves and stems were washed in bright green and then filled with malachite. This is the 7th leaf from the 2nd album in “Garden of Treasures."
