Only Shen Chou could not go. The next day he packed some wine and followed them, but when he got to Tiger Hill Wu Shih-chü had already left. After a rainstorm, Shen Chou wandered around in the hills and composed an eight-line poem of five-word lines. When Wu’s cousin Chi-chih came to ask Shen Chou for a painting, Shen used this poem as the subject of the painting and inscribed it at the top. The brushwork in the mountains and trees is round and mature, different from that in the “Lofty Mountains and Towering Bamboo” and the “Landscape Painted When Drunk”. Amid the dispersing clouds, the forest and foothills are green and damp, capturing the feeling of a landscape after rain. An old man carrying a staff is crossing a small bridge, no doubt representing Shen Chou “Traveling Alone after Rain”, which is the title of the poem. The painting was executed when Shen Chou was 49.
