Having lived for a period in the Mai-chia district of Shanghai, he also went by the sobriquet “The Mo-chia Recluse.” Disciplined in the arts, he excelled at painting flowers, birds, fish, and insects in the “sketching ideas” manner. He used ink and color with great skill, creating compositions with balance and strength. His colors were not vulgar, but rather beautiful and not superficial. His calligraphic style was based on the Ch´uan-chao-pan of the Ch´in (221-207 B.C.), while he sought his own voice in composing poetry. In this painting of a starling among cherry-apple blossoms, the composition is refined and the blossoms rendered only with delicate washes of color. A sense of utmost clarity and refinement is apparent in the bright and beautiful colors. The pose of the wagtail is both realistic and charming. This fan was donated to the Museum by Mr. Lin Tsung-i.
