At the age of 19, Castiglione entered the Jesuit order in Italy as a novitiate, and his early training included painting and architecture. He was subsequently sent to China and arrived in 1715. His artistic skills came to the attention of the emperor, and he served in the inner court during the K’ang-hsi (1662-1722), Yung-cheng (1723-1735), and Ch’ien-lung (1736-1795) reigns as a painter. He combined his previous training with studies of Chinese painting techniques to create a style fusing the best of both traditions. He excelled at depicting figures, birds-and-flowers, and especially dogs and horses. Castiglione did this painting in 1746 at the age of 58. Depicted in a natural setting are three sheep, which symbolize the beginning of the prosperous New Year based on the reading of the first hexagram in the Book of Changes. Done in delicate brushwork and refined colors, the nurturing sheep appears gentle and caring along with two young lambs rendered in a exceptionally naturalistic and animated manner. In the background is an old plum tree and verdant bamboo done in spontaneous brushwork, much in the “sketching ideas” manner of traditional Chinese painting. Thus, a different artist may have rendered the setting. 内容简介(英文): Giuseppe Castiglione (Lang Shining) was an Italian Jesuit novitiate trained in painting and architecture. At 27 he arrived in China as a missionary, his artistic skills coming to the court’s attention; he served under the Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong Emperors as a painter. Castiglione did this work at 58. In a natural setting are “3 goats,” a homophone symbolizing “Three Yang, an Auspicious Start (to the New Year).” Using delicate brushwork and refined colors with Chinese and Western methods, the nurturing ewe gently cares for her 2 lambs in a natural and animated scene. Behind is an old plum tree and verdant bamboo done in the free “sketching ideas” style of Chinese painting. This part may have thus been done by another court artist.(20120407)
