The treatment of the focks is full and moist, rather like the pine trunks of “Virtue which Reaches to Heaven”. The face and dress of the figure are very close to the boy riding a donkey in “Poetic Thoughts on the Pa Bridge” handscroll (reproduced in I-yüan i-chen, vol. III). Thus the “Ling-chih and Crane” can be dated to around 1484, when Shen Chou was 57 years old. The “Landscape in the Style of Ni Tsan” in the Nelson Gallery also dates from this year; the signatures on the two paintings are extremely similar.
