According to “Biography of Yüan An” in History of the Latter Han, the magistrate of Loyang went out on an inspection tour after a blizzard. He saw people clearing away the snow on the road and beggars, but only the gate of Yüan An’s house was still snowbound. Yüan, not wishing others to suffer from the cold to help him, chose to stay confined at home and freeze on the snowy day. After being saved, the magistrate considered him a sage and lauded him for his sense of concern and humility.
