He was well-known as a painter of Buddhist and Taoist subjects in the late Ming dynasty. This painting of lohans is one of a set of four hanging scrolls by Ting Yün-p’eng. Dense trees block the sky. Two lohans converse, seated upon a large boulder above; one holds a chowry, the other fingers a rosary. At the left is seen a seated lohan with long eyebrows holding a staff, looking at a sūtra unrolled by an acolyte. To his side is another seated lohan by the trunk of a tree. Th the right is a stone table with sūtras, vase, cups and other items. By the table is a lohan holding a fan and playing with a tiger as a young lad behind steals a curious glance. Ting Yün-p’eng’s portrayal of the tiger in this painting is quite personal. Painted with rich colors, he possesses a sense of adorable awkwardness.
