This tradition was passed down through the Ch’ing dynasty. At the Ch’ing court, Lang Shih-ning (Giuseppe Castiglione), Chin K’un, Lu Chan, and seven other Ch’ien-lung era (1736-1795) artists collaborated on four handscrolls showing the rites. In the first, Procession, the empress approaches the sericulture altar with celebratory insignias. In the second, Sacrifice, she performs offerings. In the third, Picking Mulberry Leaves, she watches princesses pick mulberry leaves. In the last, Presentation of Cocoons, princesses offer silk cocoons to the empress. On display here is the third scroll.
