He entered the Jesuit College in Italy at the age of 19 and there studied painting and architecture. In 1715, when he was 27, he was sent to China and on arrival was summoned to serve in the imperial court. He was a good a painter of figures, flowers and especially of horses. Pai-hai-ch’ing is a well-prized kind of falcon, noted especially for its fierceness. Lang Shih-ning has captured the proud and majestic aloofness of the bird, depicting it in a remarkably realistic manner.
