His style name was Yüan-chao, and his sobriquets included Hsiang-pi and Jan-hsiang An-chu. He excelled in landscape painting and often worked in the manners of Tung Yüan, the monk Chu-Jan, and Huang Kung-wang. He is one of the so-called Four Wangs of the Ch’ing dynasty. In colors of blue and green, this picture presents rows of mountains, a meandering stream, and forest mists. The inscription of the artist states that the painting is after Fan K’uan (fl. early 11th century). The brushwork is refined and delicate without sacrificing any of its elegance or vitality. The application of colors is heavy without being vulgar. This work has often been a model for later painters.
